Our Top 7 maths concepts for young learners

Here are my Top 7 maths concepts for young learners or struggling juniors in reverse order, where number 1 is my most important concept for maths understanding, and 7 the least important - although least is a misnomer, as it is also very important!

Discussion
These are meant as a stimulus to discussion, as it can be a matter of opinion as to which are most important, and of course in which order to put them!

One size doesn't suit all
I spent a long time amending these, deleting and adding new ones. In reality, things are never as simple as this list makes it seem, as children differ greatly in ability and specific learning difficulties. I have encountered children who can do the points below from 7 up to 2, but bizarrely couldn't recognise number symbols; and also children who could do most things with a number line but couldn't add one more to a given number. These points do overlap, and I suspect there may be discussion upon the order, and even on areas I may have neglected - who is to say number work is most important? It may be spatial awareness should come first?

I would be very interested to hear other teachers' views.

TOP 7 CONCEPTS

7. Moving away from physical towards the abstract when adding and subtracting to 10

6. Grouping of objects in relation to multiplication and division.

5. Adding and subtracting numbers to 10, using objects, and relating it to written notation

4. Vocabulary of maths i.e. More than, less than, how many, add, take-away etc..

3. Concepts of adding and subtracting objects from a given number of objects

2. Counting forwards, backwards in 1s. Knowing what comes before / after a chosen number. Being able to say which number is more or less than a given number.

1. Mental image of a number line. Reading, writing and ordering numbers to 20. Lots of number line and counting work to help the child to associate numbers of objects with the visual symbols.

Burn off their lethargy with private tuition in 2012

Burn Off Their Xmas Lethargy With Motivating And Inspiring 1 To 1 Tuition

You would think that private tuition would be the last thing on people's minds at this time of year. However, we have found the opposite to be true. A combination of recent Parents' Evenings, time off work to actually sort things out, and a determination to do something about your child's lack of confidence in school means that at this time of year we are as busy as ever. The holiday period is the ideal time for many to arrange a tutor's services.

Discounts
We are currently offering all sorts of extra benefits too. For instance, subscriptions to several online educational kids' websites are substantially discounted for our clients. And if you can find an existing client to give you a voucher, you and them too can get a £25 lesson for free. See here for details.

Personal, Quality Service
This is all well and good, but we realise too that quality tuition is the number one priority in our business. That's why we take great pains to fully vet our tutors.

If that wasn't enough, all lessons are fully insured, and we are based in Wigan, Warrington and St.Helens, so you can actually meet us face to face if required. Don't be drawn in by certain tuition services that work out of centres, otherwise you are actually giving your child more of the same diet of what isn't working too well at school! 1 to 1 is the way to go - common sense tells us this! But please look at our many testimonials for firmer evidence.

Here are our Top 5 educational Ipad apps for use with primary school children, in reverse order:

5. Hairy Letters (by Net Educational Systems LTD)
From the very successful Nessy.com company, this app is ideal for teaching letter sounds, and also incorporates a segmenting game where kids can put words together from the spoken letter sounds. Nice graphics and sounds; kids love it!

4. Balloons: Tap & Learn (by Zippz software)
Pre-school game based on a simple idea that it's fun and curiously satisfying to pop balloons with your finger! Helps kids to learn numbers, colours and animals.

3. Dot to Dot (by Apps in my pocket LTD)
Both numbers and letters can be chosen as options in this customisable, multiple user dot to dot app. Hundreds of pictures for children to do, and the numbers can also be set to display multiples of any number you choose. Brilliant way to practise sequences.

2. Word Magic (by Anusen Inc)
Award winning spelling app aimed at pre-school children and learners up to National Curriculum level 4. Fully customisable, where the word length, the missing part of the word and the difficulty level can be altered to suit the user. Great phonics practice and wonderful for consolidating those graphemes.

(Drum roll) 1. Pocket Phonics (by Apps in my pocket LTD)
You can program multiple players for this literacy app, which allows users to combine learning graphemes alongside sound / letter relationships, correct formation of letters (making excellent use of the touch screen) and segmenting words from spoken phonemes. A superb all-round app, ideal for children in Key Stage 1, and good revision for those children well into Key Stage 2 who are still struggling a little with reading.

We would LOVE to hear of any other good apps that help our kids to learn!
